Although one can spend a couple of days in Port St Johns, an ideal holiday on the Wild Coast might take five or more days. Below are a few of your options for a days exploration of Port St Johns.
Port St Johns is in the North of the Wild Coast, on the edge of the proposed 50,000 ha coastal bio-reserve, the Pondoland Park which will stretch from the Northern bank of the Umzimvubu to the Natal Border. Tarred roads from Mthatha and Lusikisiki meet at the Pondoland Bridge, about 5 kilometers from town, and these roads provide visitors traveling the coast with a great opportunity to take side roads to explore new countryside very easily.
As you cover the last few kilometers into Port St Johns, dropping down the last few hills and onto the road running alongside the river, you'll start seeing a few stalls, roadside traders and signs. Watch those signs.
At the Pondoland Bridge, if you've had enough, already, of traveling, then the "Mpantu" (Pont) area of Port St Johns offers options aplenty for a stay on the river, whatever your accommodation needs, from sheer luxury to simple campsites..
Five kilometer further, a drive down the side of the Umzimvubu River, through the Gates, under the sides of Mount Thesiger and on the opposite side of the river, Mount Sullivan; you'll enter the town and be able to check out the accommodation available in town.
Check in at the Tourism Offices to see the latest brochures, drop in at our supermarkets for fresh produce or turn left at Boxer Supermarket, drive past the Municipal Offices and Post Office and head for Port St Johns accommodation venues.
Select your choice of residence from luxury accommodation, lodges, guest houses, backpackers, chalets or campsites. Or follow the signs when you get into town.
